You are free

You Are Free

How many of you have something in your life that you want to do, but you’re letting fear hold you back? I would say that almost every one of us has something we would like to do, and if you get down to the very heart of why you aren’t doing it…you’ll find fear. *Sigh* it’s such a sneaky little bugger.

Fear is a control freak!

Fear is such a control freak. If we allow it to take root, it will keep us from doing all sorts of things, even things that are necessary for our health and wellbeing. For YEARS I avoided getting my shoulder looked at and I lived with pain on and off. Why? Well, I had an unwarranted fear of doctors. This was something instilled in me as a young teen. I’ll spare you all the details, but if you go back and read through some of my previous posts, you’ll see I came out of a cult, and brought a whole lot of fear and misinformation with me. It’s an on going process of healing, but I am making SO much progress. After years of shoulder pain, I finally had it looked at, had surgery to repair all that was going on, and had the most wonderful experience with my doctors, nurses and physical therapists. While I’m still recovering, my shoulder feels SO MUCH better. I even learned some techniques to help some other bodily aches and pains I have. Once I stepped outside my fear, and did what was best for myself, I found so much relief…both physically and mentally. Truly this world is a beautiful place filled with so many wonderful and good people.

What I learned during my recovery…

During my recovery from surgery, I’ve found myself feeling a bit stagnant. I wasn’t sure what to write about, what to share, and what to offer to my readers that they might find helpful. Writers block was setting in big time. I had some stuff floating around in my head that I needed to get to the bottom of. So, I started paying attention to what I was telling myself when I would start to write and then hit the mental block. Here is some of what I was saying- “Your words don’t matter.” “Do you really know what you’re talking about” “Who cares what your story is” “Why would anyone want to read this” “Why do you think you can help others? What do you know” and so much more. I was telling myself such ugly ugly words! And rather than chase these thoughts/words from my mind, I was just letting them linger. Once I realized what was happening, and how I was letting these fear based thoughts run rampant in my mind, I got to work.

Here’s what I did…

First, I figured out whose words these really were, because I knew they weren’t mine. Once I figured that out, I wrote a long letter to this author, and refuted all the untrue thoughts of theirs that I had allowed in. Next, I printed that letter out, and burned it. Yep. I sent that out into the universe and by so doing, I freed myself of their bondage. I felt so empowered in those moments of reclaiming my energy and sending that negativity up in flames. Next, I started journaling again. It was tough at first, but once I got into the rhythm again, it became therapeutic. Something else that I now see as a pivotal moment was when I opened up fully to my personal coach about some things in my life that I had never shared with her. These were things that I didn’t fully understand and couldn’t explain, but once I shared them, it felt like I dropped a 100 pound weight. Suddenly I felt freer than I had ever felt in my life. Next, I just started writing. During these writing sessions, I found myself writing the words, “You are free”. Then I wrote them again, and again and again.  I kept writing them until I felt like I truly believed it. I adjusted the sentence a few times over the course of several days/weeks. These words unlocked something for me. They banished all my fears and unwarranted disbelief in myself the same way a Patronus drives away a dementor. (Yep. Diehard Harry Potter fan here.) I genuinely felt like I was beaming from the inside out.

You. Are. Free.

YOU ARE FREE! Do you feel the power in those words?? You are free from other peoples assumptions. Free from those voices in your head that aren’t your own. You are free to be alive, to create the life you want and to live it to the fullest! So, what are YOU going to do with your freedom? Are you going to hide it away, and pretend it’s not there and let fear win? Or are you going to use your freedom to drive out that fear and take the steps that need to be taken to create the life you want to live? Because, the truth is, that exact life is there for you, but it’s up to you to reach out and grab it. It’s up to you to do the work needed to achieve your goals and banish fear. Very few things in life come without work.  Are you afraid of the work, or are you afraid of being free and living the life you were meant to live? Are you ready to take back control of your thoughts and not allow anyone else’s voice dictate what you *think* you are capable of, or would you rather sit there and hand your freedom over to them?  Truly the choice is yours, just as it was mine.  Those 3 words were just what I needed to remind myself that I was no longer living free but cowering under fear.  Once I allowed the power of those words to permeate throughout my entire being, I began to feel like me again. So, please, take these powerful words and use them in your life and then brace for the powerful changes they will help you make.

Words are Magic

Choose the words you say to yourself wisely. Root out the words and stories that aren’t yours. Words of fear will keep you trapped whereas words of freedom will give you strength and ability to live life to the fullest. Which do you choose? I’ll close with the words of the beloved character, Albus Dumbledore, “Words are, in my not-so-humble opinion, our most inexhaustible source of magic. Capable of both inflicting injury, and remedying it.”. (J.K. Rowling).
